MathVista: Evaluating Mathematical Reasoning of Foundation Models in Visual Contexts
Written for the Research library (claude-opus-5-5) from the paper text. Original — arxiv.org/pdf/2310.02255
Summary
Most benchmarks for mathematical reasoning use text only. The multimodal ones that exist tend to cover a single niche, such as geometry diagrams or bar charts. MathVista fills this gap with a single test set of 6,141 problems, each requiring a model to interpret an image and then reason about it quantitatively. The authors combined 28 public multimodal datasets: 9 math-focused QA sets and 19 VQA sets, whose math-related items were chosen by heuristic filtering and then manual expert labeling. They also built three new datasets: IQTest, FunctionQA and PaperQA. Each item is tagged with metadata such as task, visual context, grade level and the reasoning skill involved. The authors tested 12 foundation models, including text-only LLMs given image captions and OCR, plus proprietary and open-source LMMs. GPT-4V scored highest at 49.9%, well ahead of Multimodal Bard, but still about 10 points below humans. Models had particular trouble with complex figures and rigorous multi-step logic. MathVista gives a fine-grained way to measure progress on math tasks grounded in images.
Key points
- Dataset size and makeup: 6,141 examples in total; 736 are newly created across the three new sets: IQTest (puzzle figures), FunctionQA (function plots) and PaperQA (figures from academic papers).
- Taxonomy: seven reasoning types (algebraic, arithmetic, geometry, logical, numeric common sense, scientific, statistical). Five tasks: FQA, GPS, MWP, TQA and VQA.
- Models tested: three LLMs (ChatGPT, GPT-4, Claude-2) prompted with CoT and PoT, two proprietary LMMs (GPT-4V, Bard) and seven open-source LMMs.
- Accuracy:
- GPT-4V: 49.9%
- Multimodal Bard: 34.8%
- PoT GPT-4 with Bard captions and OCR: 33.9%
- CoT GPT-4 without visual tools: 29.2%
- Humans: 60.3%
- Analysis of GPT-4V: on algebraic reasoning, tables and function plots it beats humans. The paper also looks at GPT-4V's self-verification, its use of self-consistency, and multi-turn dialogues where a user helps it reach the right answer.
