Summary
The strongest vision-language models (VLMs) are closed. Most capable open-weight alternatives are trained on captions or answers produced by proprietary systems such as GPT-4V. In effect they distill closed models, so it remains unclear how to build a strong VLM from scratch. The authors release Molmo, a family of VLMs, together with PixMo, a set of training datasets collected without any external VLM. To get dense captions, annotators spoke about each image for about a minute. This produced richer descriptions than typing and left an audio recording as proof that a human wrote them. Other PixMo sets cover instruction following (refined with a text-only LLM), 2D pointing for grounding and counting, and synthetic skill data such as clocks, charts and documents. The architecture links a ViT encoder to an LLM through an attention-pooling connector and uses overlapping image crops. The 72B model beats other open models and also Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Gemini 1.5 Pro/Flash. Only GPT-4o ranks higher, on both benchmarks and human preference. Weights, data and code are all public, which makes the work a reproducible baseline.
Key points
- PixMo-Cap: 712k images with captions of 200+ words, recorded as 60–90-second spoken descriptions and then rewritten into text with an LLM.
- Fine-tuning data: 162k free-form Q&A annotations on 73k images (PixMo-AskModelAnything), more than 2.3M point annotations (PixMo-Points), and synthetic sets including PixMo-Clocks, PixMo-Docs, PixMo-Count and PixMo-CapQA.
- Model family: MolmoE-1B (OLMoE-1B-7B), Molmo-7B-O (OLMo-7B), Molmo-7B-D (Qwen2 7B) and Molmo-72B (Qwen2 72B). The main vision encoder is a CLIP ViT, and the authors report comparable results with SigLIP and MetaCLIP. They also announce a fully open MetaCLIP + OLMo variant.
- Training recipe: two stages (caption pre-training, then fine-tuning), overlapping multi-crop tiling, ViT features taken from two layers, and 2×2 attention pooling in the connector.
- Evaluation: 11 academic benchmarks plus a large human preference study. MolmoE-1B comes close to GPT-4V, and both 7B models land between GPT-4V and GPT-4o.
