Summary
Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) now score close to people on MathVista, the most widely used benchmark for visual math reasoning. The authors argue that this overstates what the models can do. Many MathVista items follow a few simple templates, such as counting objects or reading a clock, and the subjects are mostly plane geometry and charts. To test the models more fully, they built MATH-Vision (MATH-V): 3,040 image-based problems taken from 19 real mathematics competitions. Expert annotators cross-checked every problem to make sure it has one correct answer. Each item is labelled with one of 16 mathematical subjects and one of five difficulty levels. The authors tested open-source and proprietary LMMs on the benchmark and found a large gap. The best model, GPT-4V, reaches about 23% accuracy, while humans score about 76%. The subject labels also make a detailed error analysis possible. Overall, the work shows that strong MathVista scores do not mean human-level visual math reasoning, and it gives researchers a harder, more varied test.
Key points
- Dataset size and makeup: MATH-V has 3,040 problems, split almost evenly between multiple-choice (about 1,500) and open-ended formats. A 304-item testmini subset is used to measure human performance. The problems come from Math Kangaroo (1,499), UK Maths Trust contests (535) and AMC 8/10/12 and AIME (759).
- Subjects: The 16 subjects include topology, graph theory, logic, combinatorics, descriptive geometry, transformation geometry and solid geometry.
- Main result: The best LMM scores 22.76 and humans score 75.66. Proprietary models (GPT-4V, Gemini) beat open-source ones (SPHINX, InternLM-XComposer2-VL, Qwen-VL).
- Errors in GPT-4V's wrong answers: reasoning errors make up 42.2%, visual recognition errors 31.9%, knowledge gaps 15.1% and calculation errors only 1.3%. All of the calculation errors involved symbolic rather than numeric computation.
- Text-only baseline: GPT-4 given image captions written by GPT-4V scores 13.10, close to SPHINX and Qwen-VL. It even does better than GPT-4V on combinatorics and counting. The benchmark is English-only, uses abstract images only, and is released under the MIT license.
