Summary
General-purpose LLMs dominate the field, but finance has its own vocabulary and tasks, such as sentiment analysis, NER, news classification and QA. Before this work, no large generative model had been built or evaluated specifically for this domain. Bloomberg researchers address the gap with BloombergGPT, a 50-billion-parameter model that follows the BLOOM design. Its size was chosen using Chinchilla-style compute guidance. Rather than training only on domain text or adapting an existing general model, they mix the two. FinPile, a 363B-token collection drawn from Bloomberg's curated archives, is combined with 345B tokens of public data, and the model is trained on 569B tokens in total. A Unigram tokenizer replaces the usual merge-based approach. Evaluation covers general benchmarks, public financial datasets and internal Bloomberg tasks. The model clearly outperforms comparable LLMs on financial tasks while matching or exceeding them on general benchmarks. This is evidence that mixed-data training can produce a strong domain model without losing breadth. The weights remain unreleased because of data-leakage risks.
Key points
- Training corpus. The full corpus exceeds 700B tokens and is split roughly 51% financial and 49% general.
- FinPile parts: web (298B), news (38B), filings (14B), press releases (9B) and Bloomberg-authored content (5B).
- Public parts: The Pile (184B), C4 (138B) and Wikipedia (24B).
- Model and training budget. The 50B-parameter model uses ALiBi attention and was trained on 569B tokens, following the Hoffmann et al. (2022) argument that smaller models should see more data.
- Tokenizer. It is a Unigram model rather than BPE-style greedy merging, chosen because it keeps probabilities that allow smarter segmentation at inference time.
- Evaluation suite. The model was tested on:
- public financial benchmarks;
- internal Bloomberg sentiment tasks;
- exploratory financial NER;
- BIG-bench Hard;
- knowledge, reading-comprehension and linguistic tests.
- Sources of gains. The authors rank them as curated in-house data first, the tokenizer second and the modern architecture third. They do not release the model but publish Training Chronicles (Appendix C) documenting the training run.
