Summary
Large vision-language models (LVLMs) often let language priors override what an image actually shows, and their vision side can misread pictures with high confidence. HallusionBench is a hand-built diagnostic benchmark for these two failure modes, which the authors call Language Hallucination and Visual Illusion. Experts wrote 1129 yes/no questions over 346 images. Of these, 165 are originals and 181 are edited copies whose changes flip the correct answer. Topics include maps, charts, tables, optical illusions, math, OCR and video frames. Each question is either Visual Dependent (it can't be answered without the image) or Visual Supplement (it can be answered from world knowledge, with the image adding or contradicting facts). Questions are grouped into control pairs, and some are also asked with no image. This lets the authors measure consistency and response bias. A decision tree that uses GPT-4 judgments then traces each error to a cause. Of 15 models tested, GPT-4V had the best question-pair accuracy at 31.42%, and all others stayed under 16%. This shows that current LVLMs are still far from reliable image-context reasoning.
Key points
- HallusionBench has 346 images (165 original, 181 human-edited), 1129 questions and 455 visual-question control pairs.
- The taxonomy has two question types. Visual Dependent questions test visual reasoning, the effect of parametric memory and temporal order across frames. Visual Supplement questions test how well a model balances prior knowledge against the image.
- Pairing questions on original and edited images, plus asking some with no image, lets the authors classify each failure as Language Hallucination, Visual Illusion or a mix of both.
- Fifteen LVLMs were evaluated, including GPT-4V, Gemini Pro Vision, Claude 3, LLaVA-1.5 and mPLUG-Owl. GPT-4V reached 31.42% question-pair accuracy, and every other model scored below 16%.
- The benchmark and code are released at github.com/tianyi-lab/HallusionBench.
