WavChat: A Survey of Spoken Dialogue Models

Paper · 2024 · Shengpeng Ji, Yifu Chen, Minghui Fang et al.

Summary

Voice assistants are moving from pipelines that chain ASR, an LLM and TTS toward systems such as GPT-4o and Moshi. These newer systems handle speech more directly, respond with low latency and can listen while talking. The authors note that no comprehensive overview of this field existed, so they wrote one. They arrange published spoken dialogue models on a timeline and split them into two families. Cascaded systems keep text as the intermediate layer. End-to-end systems have a core language model that reads and produces speech representations itself. The survey then covers four technical areas:

  • speech tokenizers and detokenizers
  • training and alignment of speech with text, including architectures and generation strategies
  • streaming, duplex and interactive behaviour
  • training data, evaluation metrics and benchmarks

Each chapter closes with limitations and open questions. The authors stress that representation design in particular still has no settled paradigm. The work serves as a structured map of the field for researchers and engineers, and companion materials are hosted at github.com/jishengpeng/WavChat.

Key points

  • Usage scenarios: the survey sets out nine, among them text intelligence, speech intelligence (timbre, emotion, style), comprehending and producing audio and music, handling multiple languages, learning from context, interactive behaviour, streaming latency and multimodality.
  • Cascaded models covered include AudioGPT, Qwen2-Audio, VITA, LauraGPT and FunAudioLLM.
  • End-to-end models covered include dGSLM, SpeechGPT, Spirit LM, Moshi, Mini-Omni, GLM-4-Voice, OmniFlatten and Freeze-Omni.
  • Speech representations are grouped as semantic (Wav2Vec, HuBERT, Whisper, WavLM, S3 Tokenizer) or acoustic (Encodec, SpeechTokenizer, Mimi).
  • Benchmarks reviewed:
    • AIR-Bench: 19 tasks, over 19,000 single-choice and over 2,000 open-ended questions
    • SpokenWOZ: over 200,000 utterances, 249 h of audio
    • SD-Eval: 7,303 utterances, 8.76 h
    • MMAU: 27 tasks
    • SuperCLUE: Mandarin-focused, not open source
