AudioBench: A Universal Benchmark for Audio Large Language Models

Paper · 2025 · Bin Wang, Xunlong Zou, Geyu Lin et al.

Summary

Audio Large Language Models (AudioLLMs) have been hard to compare because each one is reported on its own set of datasets. For example, Qwen-Audio-Chat and SALMONN share only two of their evaluation sets. AudioBench addresses this with a unified, open-source benchmark built around three abilities:

  • understanding spoken content,
  • interpreting non-speech audio scenes,
  • recognizing paralinguistic voice traits.

The benchmark gathers 26 datasets across 8 tasks. Seven of the datasets were newly created or adapted to fill coverage gaps. Clip lengths range from a few seconds to over an hour. To test robustness to instructions, the authors use many prompt variants. Open-ended answers are scored by an open-source LLM judge, chosen through a correlation study against GPT-4.

Five systems were evaluated, mixing end-to-end and cascaded designs, and none was best on every task. The released toolkit, data, and leaderboard provide a reproducible, low-cost testbed for future AudioLLM development.

Key points

  • AudioBench covers ASR, speech QA, speech instruction, audio-scene QA, audio captioning, and emotion, accent, and gender recognition. In total it contains 400+ hours of audio across 100k+ samples, all in English.
  • Prompt sensitivity matters. One phrasing caused SALMONN to output phonemes instead of transcripts, and on CommonVoice it often translated rather than transcribed. Qwen-Audio stayed stable across prompts. As a result, tasks lacking varied instructions receive at least 20 templates.
  • Among the candidate judges, Llama-3-70B-Instruct correlated best with GPT-4 (gpt4-turbo-0409), with Spearman scores above 0.85 on CN-College-Listen, Clotho-AQA, and VoxCeleb1-Accent. It outperformed both Llama-3-8B-Instruct and the evaluation-tuned Prometheus-2.
  • Judge scores are rescaled to a 0–100 range. Captioning additionally uses METEOR, and ASR uses WER.
  • The models evaluated include WavLLM, Qwen-Audio-Chat, SALMONN, and Qwen2-Audio-Instruct. Code is available at github.com/AudioLLMs/AudioBench.
