LLaMA-Omni: Seamless Speech Interaction with Large Language Models
Paper · 2024 · Qingkai Fang, Shoutao Guo, Yan Zhou et al.
Summary
Commercial systems such as GPT-4o allow spoken, real-time conversations with LLMs, but there is little open work on building similar speech interfaces on top of open-source LLMs. Cascaded ASR → LLM → TTS pipelines are slow because each stage waits for the previous one. The authors propose LLaMA-Omni, an end-to-end model built on Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct. A frozen Whisper-large-v3 encoder and a trainable adaptor feed speech into the LLM. The LLM answers in text without first transcribing the input. In parallel, a non-autoregressive streaming Transformer decoder trained with CTC turns the LLM's hidden states into discrete speech units, which a vocoder renders as audio. Text and speech responses are therefore produced together. To suit spoken dialogue, the team built InstructS2S-200K by rewriting text instructions into a speech-friendly style and synthesizing the audio. LLaMA-Omni gives more concise and helpful spoken answers than SpeechGPT, SALMONN and Qwen2-Audio, with latency as low as 236 ms. Training takes under 3 days on 4 GPUs, which makes speech-capable LLMs cheap to build.
Key points
- Architecture: Whisper-large-v3 encoder (frozen) → speech adaptor → Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct → streaming NAR CTC speech decoder → vocoder.
- The adaptor downsamples speech by concatenating every k consecutive frames.
- Dataset: InstructS2S-200K contains 200K speech instructions paired with speech responses. It was created by restyling existing text instruction data and applying TTS.
- Latency in the streaming setting: about 236 ms total at the smallest chunk size (Ω=10), compared with roughly 1.75 s offline. SpeechGPT needs about 4.9 s even at its fastest setting.
- Speech-text consistency: LLaMA-Omni's ASR-WER is about 10%, against roughly 42–45% for SpeechGPT.
- Released resources: code at github.com/ictnlp/LLaMA-Omni and the model ICTNLP/Llama-3.1-8B-Omni on Hugging Face.
