The Llama 3 Herd of Models
Paper · 2024 · Aaron Grattafiori, Abhimanyu Dubey, Abhinav Jauhri et al.
Summary
The paper describes Llama 3, a family of foundation language models from Meta. Out of the box, they can work with multiple languages, write code, reason, and call external tools. The authors improved the models along three directions: more and cleaner data, larger scale, and simpler architecture and training. Pre-training was carried out on a corpus of approximately 15T multilingual tokens, which was more thoroughly cleaned and deduplicated. The context window was then extended from 8K to 128K tokens. The architecture is a standard dense Transformer rather than a mixture-of-experts, which makes training more stable. Post-training consists of several rounds of SFT, rejection sampling, and DPO. More complex reinforcement learning methods were deliberately not used. According to the authors' evaluations, the largest model, with 405B parameters, is on par with GPT-4 on many benchmarks and in human evaluations. The 8B and 70B models outperform competitors of the same size. The models have been openly released together with Llama Guard 3. This makes the paper an important reference for those adapting open LLMs to their own tasks. Experiments with image, video, and speech recognition via adapters are described separately.
Key points
- Model sizes: 8B, 70B, and 405B parameters. All results in the paper refer to the Llama 3.1 version, released in July 2024.
- The flagship model was trained on 15.6T tokens, requiring about 3.8 × 10²⁵ FLOPs. This is almost 50 times more than for the largest Llama 2, which was trained on only 1.8T tokens.
- The smaller models were trained considerably longer than is compute-optimal for their budget. During post-training, they were further improved using the 405B model.
- The models respond in at least eight languages. They are released under the Llama 3 Community License together with Llama Guard 3, which filters input and output texts for safety.
- For vision and speech, a compositional approach is used: separate encoders and adapters, including cross-attention for images, while the language model itself remains frozen. These multimodal versions have not yet been released.
