SpiRit-LM: Interleaved Spoken and Written Language Model
Paper · 2025 · Tu Anh Nguyen, Benjamin Muller, Bokai Yu et al.
Summary
Text-only LLMs understand meaning well, while speech language models capture prosody but lag on semantics. Cascades that chain ASR, a text LLM and TTS also lose expressivity. SpiRit-LM addresses this by turning LLaMA 2 (7B) into one model that reads and writes both speech and text. The authors continue pretraining it on three kinds of data: text-only, speech-only, and aligned speech–text pairs. In the aligned data, the modality switches at random word boundaries. Speech is represented as discrete HuBERT units, and text as LLaMA BPE tokens. An Expressive variant also adds pitch and style tokens. A HifiGAN vocoder trained on Expresso turns the units back into audio. The model handles comprehension tasks in either modality and picks up ASR, TTS and speech classification from a few in-context examples. The authors also introduce the STSP benchmark, and the Expressive version is the first LM shown to keep a prompt's sentiment within and across modalities. Weights and inference code are released, which makes this an open baseline for joint speech–text generation.
Key points
- Models: SpiRit-LM-Base uses 501 deduplicated HuBERT phonetic units. SpiRit-LM-Expressive merges three token streams ordered by timestamp: HuBERT at 25 Hz, pitch at 12.5 Hz, and style at 1 Hz (100 k-means units).
- Role of interleaving: In ablations, word-level interleaving drives cross-modal transfer, and removing it causes large drops on cross-modal StoryCloze-type tasks. Starting from pretrained LLaMA 2 matters for knowledge: 5-shot MMLU is 36.9 for Base, 32.1 without interleaving, and 25.8 with random initialization.
- New benchmark: STSP (Speech-Text Sentiment Preservation) measures whether generated continuations keep the prompt's sentiment in T→T, S→S, T→S and S→T settings.
- Toxicity: Added toxicity was compared with a Whisper + LLaMA 2 + MMS-TTS cascade. Under ETOX the two are similar (1.19 vs 1.22 for T→T). Under MuTox, SpiRit-LM is higher for S→S (3.75 vs 2.70), likely because the speech training data contains more toxic content.
- Limitations: Text performance falls below the original LLaMA 2. The evaluation covers English only and models at 7B only. The released models are not safety-tuned.
