OmniFlatten: An End-to-end GPT Model for Seamless Voice Conversation
Paper · 2025 · Qinglin Zhang, Luyao Cheng, Chong Deng et al.
Summary
Full-duplex voice assistants must listen and speak at the same time and cope with interruptions, overlapping speech and backchannels. Most speech-text LLMs are still turn-based. Existing duplex systems such as Moshi model parallel streams, which standard GPT architectures do not support without special designs. OmniFlatten takes a text LLM (Qwen2-0.5B) and leaves its architecture untouched. It teaches the model speech through three post-training stages: modality alignment via ASR and TTS, half-duplex dialogue learning, and full-duplex dialogue learning. Speech is converted to discrete tokens with the CosyVoice 2 tokenizer. User and assistant speech and text streams are split into short chunks and merged into one flat token sequence, so a single autoregressive model covers every stage. The authors also built a pipeline that synthesizes and simulates full-duplex dialogue data. LLM-based judging shows reasonable response quality. Turn-taking tests show OmniFlatten reacts faster and more accurately than Moshi. The result suggests that natural duplex voice interaction can be reached without structural changes or expensive pre-training.
Key points
- The backbone is Qwen2-0.5B and the speech tokenizer comes from CosyVoice 2. The model generates text and speech tokens together, unlike SyncLM, which outputs only speech units.
- In full-duplex chunking, each step takes five user speech tokens and returns two assistant text tokens plus five assistant speech tokens. A two-stream variant drops the assistant text stream entirely.
- On assistant turn-taking, OmniFlatten reaches 20.6/53.6/66.3/71.7% Acc@1/5/10/25, versus 2.9/18.8/38.5/55.1% for Moshi. Its average response time is 193 ms, compared with 553 ms for Moshi.
- On user turn-taking (stopping when the user interrupts), OmniFlatten reaches 10.9/30.9/41.8/51.8% Acc@K, versus 0.0/6.2/14.8/45.7% for Moshi. Its average response time is 287 ms, compared with 753 ms. Neither model is highly reliable here.
- Ablations show that both the modality alignment and half-duplex stages improve full-duplex quality. The authors list three limitations: the small model and data scale, a chat ability gap relative to larger systems such as LLaMA-Omni and GLM-4-Voice, and no handling of backchannels.
