SciRIFF: A Resource to Enhance Language Model Instruction-Following over Scientific Literature
Paper · 2025 · David Wadden, Kejian Shi, Jacob Morrison et al.
Summary
Researchers increasingly want LLMs that can work directly with scientific papers. That means following detailed instructions over long article text and returning structured, evidence-backed answers. Few training resources target this skill across multiple fields. The authors address the gap with SciRIFF, a meta-dataset built from existing human-annotated scientific datasets. They converted each source into instruction-following form using templates that the authors themselves wrote and cross-checked. Most tasks also needed custom conversion scripts. Many tasks require JSON responses that pair answers with supporting evidence from the source text.
They fine-tuned several LLMs on a mix of SciRIFF and general instruction data from Tülu v2. They then tested the models on held-out tasks with unseen formats. These models outperformed baselines trained only on general data by a large margin. Simpler templates, written in the style of prior work or produced by GPT-4o, gave notably weaker results. Even the strongest models, including proprietary ones, remain far from mastering the benchmark. This makes SciRIFF useful both for training and as a challenging test of literature-grounded understanding.
Key points
- SciRIFF contains 137K instances spread over 54 tasks, which fall into five groups: classification, verifying claims, answering questions, summarizing, and pulling out information. It covers AI, biomedicine, clinical medicine, chemistry and materials science.
- SciRIFF-Eval holds out nine tasks (about 4.1K instances) to measure out-of-distribution generalization.
- Mixing SciRIFF with Tülu v2 data yields an average gain of 70.6% on SciRIFF-Eval over general-domain-only baselines. Both the fine-tuned models and frontier proprietary models score only around 60%.
- 34 of the 54 tasks use JSON outputs. 50 tasks rely on hand-written Python scripts for answer extraction and normalization.
- The dataset, evaluation suite, checkpoints and code are released at github.com/allenai/SciRIFF and on Hugging Face (allenai/SciRIFF).
