GLM-4-Voice: Towards Intelligent and Human-Like End-to-End Spoken Chatbot
Paper · 2024 · Aohan Zeng, Zhengxiao Du, Mingdao Liu et al.
Summary
Conventional spoken assistants chain ASR, an LLM and TTS. This design adds latency, compounds recognition and synthesis errors, and struggles to express emotion. Existing end-to-end alternatives either have too little speech data or skip speech pre-training entirely. GLM-4-Voice is a bilingual (Chinese/English) end-to-end chatbot initialized from the text model GLM-4-9B.
Audio is discretized by a single-codebook tokenizer running at 12.5 Hz and 175 bps. The tokenizer is built by fine-tuning whisper-large-v3 with a vector-quantization bottleneck inserted in its encoder. A flow-matching decoder, modified for streaming, converts tokens back into waveforms.
Speech data is scarce, so the authors use a text-to-token model to turn ordinary text pre-training corpora into synthetic interleaved speech-text sequences. They combine these with unsupervised speech and ASR/TTS pairs for roughly 1 trillion tokens of continued pre-training. Conversational fine-tuning then uses a "streaming thoughts" format that alternates text and speech tokens to reduce response delay.
The model beats Moshi and other baselines on spoken QA and surpasses earlier spoken chatbots in both answer quality and speech naturalness. The weights are publicly released.
Key points
- Tokenizer: GLM-4-Voice-Tokenizer uses one codebook at 12.5 Hz (175 bps), derived from whisper-large-v3. Variants at 50, 25 and 6.25 Hz were also built, and the 12.5 Hz one was chosen.
- Pre-training: continued pre-training of GLM-4-9B on about 1T tokens. The mix combines synthetic interleaved speech-text data generated from text corpora, unsupervised speech, and supervised ASR/TTS data.
- Spoken QA (Web Questions / Llama Questions / TriviaQA):
- Speech-to-text: 32.2 / 64.7 / 39.1, versus Moshi's 26.6 / 62.3 / 22.8.
- Speech-to-speech: 15.9 / 50.7 / 26.5, versus Moshi's 9.2 / 21.0 / 7.3.
- Chat evaluation against SpeechGPT, Mini-Omni, Llama-Omni and Moshi:
- GPT-4o-judged scores: 5.40 for General QA and 5.20 for Knowledge.
- Speech naturalness: UTMOS of 4.45.
- Speech-text alignment: ASR-WER of 5.74%, the best among the compared systems.
- Base model ASR/TTS: performance is roughly on par with whisper-large-v3 and CosyVoice on LibriSpeech, AISHELL-1, LibriTTS and Seed-TTS.
- Availability: the model is released as THUDM/glm-4-voice-9b on Hugging Face, with code on GitHub (THUDM/GLM-4-Voice).
