Baichuan-Omni Technical Report
Paper · 2024 · Yadong Li, Haoze Sun, Mingan Lin et al.
Summary
GPT-4o showed what a single model handling several input types can do, but the open-source community had no comparable system. Baichuan-omni fills this gap. It is a 7B Multimodal Large Language Model that accepts text, images, video and audio together, mainly in English and Chinese. The authors built a large training mix from open-source, synthetic and in-house data. Synthetic data includes parsed books and papers, generated captions, and ASR transcripts cleaned by combining several models. Training runs in two phases. First, the image, video and audio encoders and projectors are aligned with the language model. Then the whole system is fine-tuned on many cross-modal tasks. For interaction, the model detects where speech begins and ends while encoding visual frames as they arrive, which allows streaming input. The model outperforms the earlier open omni-modal model VITA across image, video and audio benchmarks. The weights, training code and evaluation scripts are public, so the release serves as an open baseline for further multimodal research.
Key points
- The supervised fine-tuning set covers over 200 tasks and about 600,000 examples. It spans text, audio, image-text, video-text and image-audio data. Samples are packed into batches and kept separate using flash-attention2 sequence-length isolation.
- The pre-training sources include:
- Images: PIN-14M, MINT-1T, LAION-5B and OBELIC.
- Video: ShareGPT4Video, WebVid, ActivityNet-QA and YouTube clips captioned by GPT-4o.
- Video ablations:
- Cutting the input from 64 to 48 frames lowers the average score from 54.7 to 50.1.
- AnyRes adds about 5 points over a fixed 384 px resolution.
- Skipping video-text pre-training costs about 6 points on MVBench.
- The Conv-GMLP audio projector holds up well under compression. Average WER is 7.7% at downsampling rate 2, 8.3% at rate 4 and 8.0% at rate 8, measured on Fleurs, WenetSpeech and KeSpeech.
- Multimodal SFT beats instruction tuning alone on most benchmarks. MMVet rises from 55.0 to 65.4 and MMBench-CN from 69.3 to 74.9. The authors list remaining gaps: text extraction, long videos, built-in TTS, and recognizing environmental sounds.
