Vibe-Eval: A hard evaluation suite for measuring progress of multimodal language models

Paper · 2024 · Piotr Padlewski, Max Bain, Matthew Henderson et al.

Summary

Static multimodal benchmarks are quickly saturated by frontier models, and public arenas such as LMSys and WildVision make it hard to control prompt quality and difficulty. To address this, the Reka team built Vibe-Eval, a small, curated benchmark of 269 image-plus-question tasks. Each task comes with an expert-written gold answer, often including intermediate reasoning. Team members created the prompts themselves, mostly from new photos and screenshots, which keeps the risk of training-data contamination very low. Every item went through two independent review rounds.

The benchmark has a normal subset for everyday use and a hard subset mined from failures of Reka Core. Scoring uses Reka Core as a text-only judge. It compares each model answer with the reference and assigns a 1–5 rating, which allows partial credit. The authors report that these automatic scores roughly agree with human judgments.

More than half of the hard prompts defeat every frontier model tested, so the suite still separates strong systems. The authors also present it as a lightweight vibe check for chat models.

Key points

  • The dataset has 269 prompts: 169 normal-set items of varied difficulty and 100 hard-set items that Reka Core answered partly or fully wrong when they were collected.
  • Over 50% of hard-set questions were missed by all frontier models evaluated, including GPT-4V, Claude-3 Opus and Gemini 1.5 Pro.
  • In the official protocol, Reka Core judges answers against the reference text without seeing the image and gives a 1–5 score. Human evaluation used pointwise accuracy questions rather than direct rankings.
  • Some hard prompts that the large models failed were solved by the small models Reka Edge (7B) and Idefics-2 (8B). The authors read this as a hint of inverse scaling.
  • Code and data are released at github.com/reka-ai/reka-vibe-eval, with free API access offered for evaluation.
