Baichuan-Omni-1.5 Technical Report
Paper · 2025 · Yadong Li, Jun Liu, Tao Zhang et al.
Summary
Open-source multimodal LLMs mostly pair vision with text. Voice support usually relies on separate ASR and TTS modules, which add latency. End-to-end omni models such as VITA-1.5 and Mini-Omni2 often lose quality when modalities compete, especially on text-only tasks. Baichuan-Omni-1.5 is a single 7B-scale model that accepts text, image, video and audio input and produces both text and speech. Its LLM decoder interleaves text and audio tokens, and an audio decoder converts the audio tokens into a waveform. The authors built a cleaning and synthesis pipeline that yields roughly 500B multimodal training samples. This includes synthetic Chinese captions to offset the English bias of public data. They also designed Baichuan-Audio-Tokenizer to encode both semantic and acoustic information, and trained the model in stages, moving from modality alignment to multitask fine-tuning. The model beats GPT-4o-mini and MiniCPM-o 2.6 on many benchmarks and is especially strong in medical imaging. This makes it a competitive open baseline for real-time bilingual (Chinese/English) voice and vision assistants.
Key points
- Training data: about 500B high-quality text, audio and vision samples. Sources include public sets such as DenseFusion-1M, MINT-1T, LAION-5B and ShareGPT4Video, plus in-house books and papers parsed into interleaved, OCR and chart data.
- Baichuan-Audio-Tokenizer: an 8-layer RVQ tokenizer running at 12.5 Hz. It supports controllable real-time bilingual dialogue. The authors also release OpenAudio-Bench for end-to-end audio evaluation.
- Vision: average of 73.3 across ten image-understanding benchmarks, about 6 points above GPT-4o-mini.
- Medical: the new OpenMM-Medical benchmark contains 88,996 images from 42 public medical datasets with multiple-choice VQA.
- On OpenMM-Medical the model scores 83.8%, ahead of Qwen2-VL-72B (80.7%) and MiniCPM-o 2.6 (73.6%).
- On GMAI-MMBench-VAL it scores 49.9%.
- Stated limitations: text understanding, long-video handling and recognition of non-speech environmental sounds still need improvement.
