UniChart: A Universal Vision-language Pretrained Model for Chart Comprehension and Reasoning
Paper · 2023 · Ahmed Masry, Parsa Kavehzadeh, Xuan Long Do et al.
Summary
Answering questions about charts, summarizing them, or recovering their data requires a model that understands how bars, lines, labels and legends relate to each other. General vision-language models, trained on natural images or web text, largely ignore this structure. The prior chart model MatCha was built on a fairly small chart set and lacked text-generation objectives. The authors compiled a pretraining corpus of 611K real-world charts from crawled websites and existing datasets. Because most of these charts had no useful captions, they used ChatGPT to produce summaries through knowledge distillation. UniChart pairs an end-to-end chart image encoder with a text decoder that is steered by task prompts. It is pretrained on two kinds of objectives: low-level ones, such as extracting the data table and visual elements, and high-level ones, such as reasoning and summarization. After fine-tuning, it reaches state-of-the-art results on four benchmarks and runs much faster than MatCha. The released model and corpus give future chart-understanding research a strong, efficient starting point.
Key points
- Corpus: 611K charts, drawn from Statista, OWID, OECD, Pew and public datasets such as PlotQA, ExcelChart400K and LineCap. Synthetic-data chart sets were excluded, and some tables were augmented using Web Data Commons.
- Pretraining objectives: recovering the underlying data table, writing summaries of charts, reasoning over numbers and visual elements, and answering open-ended questions.
- Results: state of the art on ChartQA, OpenCQA, Chart-to-Text and Chart-to-Table. Gains were confirmed by BLEU, ChatGPT ratings and human evaluation, and the model also generalizes to the unseen WebCharts styles.
- Efficiency: UniChart has 201M parameters versus 282M for MatCha (28% fewer) and is over 11× faster. The speedup comes from a sliding-window, local-attention encoder whose cost grows linearly with image size.
- Limitations and release: the model still struggles with dense charts, compositional arithmetic and factual hallucinations, the last partly inherited from ChatGPT-generated captions. Code and corpus are available at github.com/vis-nlp/UniChart.
