LiveCodeBench: Holistic and Contamination Free Evaluation of Large Language Models for Code

Summary
Popular code benchmarks such as HumanEval and MBPP have become less useful for judging modern LLMs. Their problems may have leaked into training data, and they test only one skill: turning a natural-language description into code. LiveCodeBench addresses both issues. It continuously collects fresh problems from weekly contests on LeetCode, AtCoder and CodeForces and stamps each with its release date. Each model can then be scored only on problems published after its training cutoff. The benchmark also widens the scope beyond code generation to self-repair, code execution and test output prediction, and it uses platform difficulty ratings to balance problem difficulty. The authors tested 52 models on the benchmark. Several, including DeepSeek, GPT-4-O and Codestral, scored much worse on problems released after their cutoffs, which points to contamination. Some fine-tuned open models look strong on HumanEval but weak here, suggesting overfitting. The result is a time-aware, extensible framework for fairer evaluation of code models.
Key points
- The benchmark contains 511 contest problems released between May 2023 and May 2024, with roughly 17 tests per problem on average.
- The evaluation covers 18 base and 34 instruction-tuned LLMs across four scenarios. Contamination-aware filtering left 349 code generation problems, and the authors estimate about 1–1.5% score variance from sampling.
- Closed API models (the GPT-4 family, Claude-3-Opus, Gemini) generally beat open ones. Only large (>30B) instruction-tuned open models come close: L3-Ins-70B, Mixtral and DS-Ins-33B.
- Rankings shift by task. Claude-3-Opus overtakes GPT-4 on test output prediction, and open models often fail to benefit from chain-of-thought prompting on code execution.
- Limitations:
- Only Python is covered.
- All problems come from competitive programming.
- Prompts were not tuned per model.
- Models with newer cutoffs get smaller evaluation sets.
- A private test set and additional platforms are planned.
