Summary
Open code LLMs have trailed proprietary systems such as GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet. This report from Alibaba's Qwen Team introduces Qwen2.5-Coder, the successor to CodeQwen1.5, to narrow that gap. It is a family of six models (0.5B to 32B) that reuse the Qwen2.5 architecture and tokenizer.
The authors continue pre-training Qwen2.5 on Qwen2.5-Coder-Data, a mixture of more than 5.5T tokens. It combines:
- source code
- web text paired with code
- synthetic samples
- math and general text
Training runs first on individual files and then on whole repositories, using dedicated tokens for fill-in-the-middle and repository structure. A curated instruction set, drawn from real-world and synthetic sources, then turns the base models into coding assistants.
The models reach state-of-the-art results among open models of comparable size on over ten benchmarks. These cover generation, completion, reasoning, repair, text-to-SQL and tables. The 32B instruct version is reported to rival GPT-4o at coding while keeping solid math and general skills. Its permissive license makes the family practical for research and deployment.
Key points
- Data sources: GitHub repositories created before February 2024, covering 92 programming languages, plus pull requests, commits, Jupyter notebooks and Kaggle data. All were cleaned with rule-based filters.
- Web-text filtering: Code-related text from Common Crawl was filtered in coarse-to-fine stages using lightweight fastText classifiers. Four stages raised the 1.5B model's average HumanEval/MBPP score from 41.6% to 46.8%.
- Special tokens: New tokens support Fill-in-the-Middle (
<|fim_prefix|>,<|fim_middle|>,<|fim_suffix|>,<|fim_pad|>) and repo-level context (<|repo_name|>,<|file_sep|>). The vocabulary has 151,646 entries. - Math and table results: Qwen2.5-Coder-32B-Instruct scores 76.4 on MATH, 93.0 on GSM8K and 45.1 on TableBench, the best TableBench result among the compared models.
- Scaling: Performance on MBPP-3shot and recent LiveCodeBench questions (2024.07–2024.11) rises with model size. The authors therefore plan to explore larger code LLMs.
