ChartDiff: A Large-Scale Benchmark for Comprehending Pairs of Charts
Paper · 2026 · Rongtian Ye
Summary
Most chart-understanding benchmarks test a model on one chart at a time. Real analysis, however, often means placing two charts side by side and explaining how they differ. ChartDiff addresses this gap with 8,541 chart pairs for cross-chart comparative summarization.
The author gathered time-series tables from Macrotrends, Yahoo Finance and Visual Crossing across eight domains. Each pair of series differs in exactly one respect: entity, time span or data category. The pairs were rendered with Matplotlib, Plotly and Plotnine in about 60 styles and six chart types. Reference summaries describe differences in trends, fluctuations and anomalies. They come from a multi-stage LLM annotate–judge–verify pipeline with human checking.
The study compared general-purpose, chart-specialized and pipeline models. Frontier general-purpose VLMs score best under GPT-based evaluation. Specialized and pipeline systems achieve higher ROUGE but lower human-aligned quality, so lexical overlap is a misleading measure for this task. Multi-series charts remain difficult across all model families. The benchmark offers a testbed for models meant to support real comparative analytics.
Key points
- The dataset covers roughly 200 countries/regions, 100 cities and 100 stocks across eight domains. Charts include line, bar, horizontal bar, multi-series line, multi-series bar and pie types, and all were manually inspected for rendering defects.
- On overall GPT Score, GPT-5.4 reaches 4.95, Qwen3.5-397B-A17B 4.54, Deplot + GPT-5.4 3.58 and ChartGemma 2.0. MatCha performs lower still.
- Pie charts are easiest for general-purpose models but break DePlot-based pipelines, probably because DePlot was not pretrained on pie charts.
- Strong end-to-end models are largely insensitive to the plotting library (GPT-5.4: 4.93–4.97). Deplot + GPT-5.4, by contrast, drops from 4.08 on Matplotlib to 3.12 on Plotly.
- Limitations include partly LLM-generated annotations, a restricted set of chart types, and reliance on GPT-Score as an imperfect automatic judge.
