SciGraphQA: A Large-Scale Synthetic Multi-Turn Question-Answering Dataset for Scientific Graphs
Paper · 2023 · Shengzhi Li and Nima Tajbakhsh
Summary
Interpreting graphs in scientific papers is hard for multimodal LLMs. Existing chart VQA datasets are small or depend on synthetic charts with templated, fixed-vocabulary questions. The authors build SciGraphQA by extending SciCap+, which covers roughly 290K Computer Science and stat.ML arXiv papers from 2010–2020. For each graph, the text-only Palm-2 model received the paper title, abstract, caption, the first paragraph citing the figure, and OCR text. From this context it wrote open-ended, multi-turn question-answer dialogues. GPT-4 checked a 3K test split and judged the dialogues highly consistent with the source context.
The authors then benchmarked popular MLLMs zero-shot. All performed poorly, and LLaVA-13B was the strongest. Two changes helped:
- adding DePlot-extracted data tables to the prompt roughly doubled LLaVA's score;
- LoRA fine-tuning on SciGraphQA improved it further.
The resource matters because it is the largest open chart-QA set built on real (non-synthetic) academic figures. It also gives a reproducible benchmark for scientific-graph understanding.
Key points
- Scale: 295K graphs with about 657K question-answer pairs, averaging 2.23 turns per dialogue. This is roughly 13× larger than ChartQA.
- Data quality: GPT-4 gave an average rating of 8.7/10 on the 3K test set.
- Zero-shot results:
- Models evaluated: LLaVA, mPLUG-Owl, BLIP-2 and OpenFlamingo.
- LLaVA-13B reached the top CIDEr of 0.08.
- Adding DePlot tables raised its CIDEr to 0.15.
- Fine-tuning results: the LoRA-fine-tuned LLaVA-13B baseline reached CIDEr 0.26. Most of the gain came from the first half of the training data. A further 30K DePlot-augmented subset improved scores consistently.
- Availability: only CIDEr, ROUGE and BLEU-4 were reported, because GPT-4-based judging proved inconsistent and non-reproducible. Code and data are released on GitHub and HuggingFace.
