ChartLlama: A Multimodal LLM for Chart Understanding and Generation
Paper · 2023 · Yucheng Han, Chi Zhang, Xin Chen et al.
Summary
General-purpose multimodal LLMs read everyday photos well but struggle with charts. The main cause is a shortage of suitable instruction data: existing chart datasets rely on web-crawled figures with thin annotations and rarely include the plotting code needed to teach chart generation. The authors build a synthetic data pipeline driven by GPT-4 in three stages. First, GPT-4 invents tabular data steered by chosen themes, distributions and trends. Second, it writes Matplotlib scripts that render those tables as charts. Third, it produces descriptions, question-answer pairs and original or modified code as instruction data. The resulting public dataset covers ten chart types and seven task types. On top of it they fine-tune ChartLlama, built on LLaVA-1.5. The authors report that it beats earlier approaches on ChartQA, Chart-to-text and chart extraction while using much less training data. It also clearly improves over the baseline on their own benchmark of new chart and task types. The work shows that controllable synthetic data can give open models chart reasoning, de-rendering and editing skills.
Key points
- The dataset contains about 11K chart figures and 160K instruction-tuning samples across 10 chart types and 7 task types. By comparison, ChartQA, PlotQA, Chart-to-text, Unichart and StructChart each cover at most 6 chart types and 3 tasks, although some are much larger (PlotQA has 28M samples).
- Supported tasks include QA, chart description, chart-to-table extraction, de-rendering a chart into matplotlib code, text-to-chart, chart-to-chart and chart editing (for example, recolouring bars or removing grid lines).
- ChartLlama is built on LLaVA-1.5, which itself derives from Vicuna/Llama. In qualitative comparisons, it can draw chart types such as funnel charts that the LLaVA-1.5 baseline cannot produce.
- Because the generation pipeline is flexible, new chart types and tasks can be added without manual annotation or web crawling.
- Limitation relevant to Ukrainian projects: the vision encoder cannot do multilingual OCR, so charts with non-English text (including Cyrillic) are not handled well.
