CharTide: Data-Centric Chart-to-Code Generation via Tri-Perspective Tuning and Inquiry-Driven Evolution
Paper · 2026 · Xiangxi Zheng, Kuang He, Jiayi Hu et al.
Summary
CharTide addresses chart-to-code generation, where a vision-language model must turn a chart image into plotting code that runs and reproduces the chart accurately. The authors argue that adding more chart–code pairs stops helping because boilerplate code dominates the training tokens and visual details get little supervision. They also find RL rewards from VLM judges or hand-written rules unreliable. Their approach has two stages. First, a 2M-sample SFT corpus built mainly from ChartCap is split into three streams: chart-to-caption for perception, caption-to-code for pure coding logic, and chart-to-code for fusing the two. Second, GRPO-based RL uses a frozen Inspector model. It answers factual questions about the original chart and the rendered output, and the reward depends on whether the answers agree. A visual-similarity reward is added on top. On ChartMimic, Plot2Code and ChartX, CharTide-7B/8B beats open-source baselines and GPT-4o and comes close to GPT-5. This shows that how training data is designed can matter more than model size for strict multimodal code generation.
Key points
- Tri-Perspective SFT data (≈2M samples):
- Captions are length-filtered for the perception stream.
- Caption→code samples come from Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B and are checked by Qwen3-VL-235B-A22B.
- The fusion stream draws on about 1M chart images, including 500k from ChartCap. Its code is regenerated by Qwen3-VL-235B-A22B and filtered by WebSSL feature similarity.
- SFT result: With supervised training alone, the 7B model outperforms 235B-scale baselines on ChartMimic.
- Inquiry-Driven RL:
- The method assumes that a faithful reproduction should let the Inspector answer the same questions identically on both charts.
- About 10 QA items are generated per reference chart.
- The QA-accuracy reward is combined with a visual-similarity reward inside GRPO.
- Visual encoder ablation: WebSSL-1B outperformed SigLIP-so400m and DINOv2-G as the similarity backbone, reaching a 96.4 execution rate and an 80.5 Low-Level score.
- Contamination check: All 600 ChartMimic test charts were compared against the 500k ChartCap images using averaged WebSSL-1B and DINOv2-Giant embeddings. The closest matches shared only chart type or color scheme, not the underlying data.
- Limitations:
- Experiments cover only 7B/8B models.
- Only direct mimicking is evaluated, not editing or style transfer.
