Chart-RL: Generalized Chart Comprehension via Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards
Paper · 2026 · Xin Zhang, Xingyu Li, Rongguang Wang et al.
Summary
Vision-language models (VLMs) often fail on charts they have not seen before. Chart questions call for symbolic and quantitative multi-step reasoning, and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) on domain data tends to overfit and cause forgetting. The authors propose Chart-RL, which extends the open-source VLM-R1 platform with R1-style reinforcement learning using verifiable rewards. They train Qwen2.5-VL-3B-Instruct and Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct with GRPO and two rule-based rewards:
- an accuracy reward that is 1 when the relative error between the predicted and true numeric answer falls under a threshold;
- a binary format reward that requires reasoning inside
<thinking>tags and a JSON answer inside<answer>tags.
Chart-RL beats SFT on MultiChartQA and ChartInsights. It holds up under visual perturbations and transfers to visual math problems it was not trained on. The central finding is that the difficulty of training tasks matters more than their volume. A handful of hard multi-step chart queries teaches more general skills than thousands of simple lookup questions. This makes RL a data-efficient option for chart understanding when answers can be checked automatically.
Key points
- MultiChartQA improved by 16.7% in relative terms, while ChartInsights improved by 11.5%. For the 3B model, hard-task RL training raised scores from 35.2 to 41.1 and from 36.4 to 40.6 respectively.
- RL on the "easy" task (6,200 subsampled PlotQA charts with single-step numeric extraction) left results slightly below the baseline. Training on just 10 complex chart-query examples clearly outperformed it.
- During training, the easy-task accuracy reward plateaued near 0.9. The hard-task reward started around 0.2 and kept improving, giving a lasting learning signal.
- Chart-RL improved results in 18 of 25 perturbed chart categories. On MathVerse Vision it rose from 1.8 to 2.8, a +55.6% relative gain from a low starting point.
- Limitations: the method needs deterministic, verifiable answers and carefully curated complex tasks, and its evaluation coverage is narrow. The authors suggest alternating SFT and RL stages as future work.
