Chart-MRAG: Benchmarking Multimodal Retrieval Augmented Generation on Chart-based Documents
Paper · 2026 · Ymyang, Jiang Zhong, Li Jin et al.
Summary
Benchmarks for multimodal retrieval-augmented generation (MRAG) have mostly tested natural images or simple image-text combinations. Dense, structured visuals such as charts, which are common in real documents, have been largely ignored. The authors define a Chart-based MRAG task in which answering a text query may require evidence from paragraphs, from charts, or from both.
To produce test data at scale, they build CHARGE, a semi-automatic pipeline with three steps:
- GPT-4o, with ChartOCR for chart values, converts text and charts into atomic factual keypoints.
- The keypoints are linked into a knowledge graph, near-duplicates are filtered out, and the graph is grouped into topic communities.
- Pairs of related keypoints are sampled to write questions. An LLM judge keeps a question only if it needs both keypoints together and fails with either one alone or with none.
After expert review, the resulting Chart-MRAG Bench is used to evaluate retrievers and MLLMs. Unified multimodal embedding retrieval handles charts poorly. Even with perfect retrieval, top models fall well short of full accuracy. Models also systematically favour text over charts. This makes chart reasoning a clear open weakness of current MRAG systems.
Key points
- Chart-MRAG Bench has 4,738 expert-approved QA pairs, about 80% of 5,866 generated candidates. It covers 267 documents, 8 domains, 8 question types, 1,283 paragraphs and 627 charts.
- There are three sub-tasks: Text-Chart MRAG, Text-only RAG and Chart-only MRAG. Questions are also split into intra-document and inter-document multi-hop items.
- The authors introduce keypoint-based Correctness and Coverage metrics. With ground-truth retrieval, the best model, Claude-4.5-Sonnet, reaches only 71.15 Correctness and 80.74 Coverage.
- A modality-bias test used 100 questions answerable from either text or charts. Models consistently relied on text even when the chart held more precise values. GPT-4o explicitly flagged the redundancy in 23% of its answers.
- Bibliographic note: the first author is Yuming Yang (Chongqing University); "Ymyang" is the email handle. Twelve professional annotators did the validation, and the dataset and code are publicly released.
