Towards Holistic Evaluation of Large Audio-Language Models: A Comprehensive Survey

Paper · 2025 · Chih-Kai Yang, Neo S. Ho and Hung-yi Lee

Summary

Large audio-language models (LALMs) extend text LLMs so they can take in and sometimes produce speech, environmental sounds and music. The benchmarks used to test them have multiplied, but they are scattered and unorganized. Earlier surveys concentrated on architectures and training rather than assessment. Yang, Ho and Lee address this with what they describe as the first survey devoted specifically to LALM evaluation.

They sort existing benchmarks by evaluation objective into a four-part taxonomy, each part with its own subcategories:

  • basic auditory perception and processing
  • knowledge and reasoning
  • conversational skills
  • fairness, safety and trustworthiness

Some benchmarks appear under several headings because they mix tasks or require combined skills. The survey finds that current models are still far from robust, human-like auditory competence across the board.

It also points to open problems:

  • data contamination
  • limited attention to human diversity
  • audio-specific safety risks
  • the trade-off between helpfulness and harmlessness
  • the lack of personalization benchmarks

The work matters because it helps researchers choose suitable benchmarks and see where the field stands. The authors promise to release and maintain a curated list of the surveyed papers.

Key points

  • The taxonomy's top-level dimensions are General Auditory Awareness and Processing, Knowledge and Reasoning, Dialogue-oriented Ability, and Fairness, Safety, and Trustworthiness. The full classification of works is in Appendix A.
  • Dynamic-SUPERB introduced instruction-style evaluation with 55 multiple-choice QA tasks covering speech, audio and music. Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2 grew this to 180 tasks, the largest general-processing suite to date. AIR-Bench and AudioBench add open-ended QA, often scored with LLM-as-a-judge.
  • Linguistic knowledge is measured with likelihood-based tests:
    • ZeroSpeech 2021, with sWUGGY for lexical knowledge and sBLIMP for syntax
    • CSZS for multilingual and code-switched syntax
    • sStoryCloze and tStoryCloze for narrative coherence
  • Other representative benchmarks include SALMon and EmphAssess (awareness), MMAU and SAKURA (reasoning), VoiceBench (knowledge and safety), Full-Duplex-Bench and Talking Turns (dialogue), Spoken Stereoset (bias) and CMM (hallucination).
  • Subjective measures of speech generation quality, such as Mean Opinion Score, are deliberately left out of scope.

Our summary of the paper, in our own words — not its text. The work belongs to its authors; read it at the links above.
