InternLM-XComposer-2.5: A Versatile Large Vision Language Model Supporting Long-Contextual Input and Output

Paper · 2024 · Pan Zhang, Xiaoyi Dong, Yuhang Zang et al.

Summary

Open-source vision-language models still lag behind proprietary systems like GPT-4V in versatility. The authors attribute this mainly to narrow training data and weak handling of long inputs and outputs. They present InternLM-XComposer-2.5 (IXC-2.5), built on InternLM2-7B and trained on 24K-token interleaved image-text sequences, which can be extended to 96K via RoPE extrapolation. Compared with IXC-2, it improves three comprehension skills:

  • ultra-high-resolution images, using a 560×560 ViT plus the dynamic partitioning from IXC2-4KHD;
  • fine-grained video, by tiling frames into one large composite image;
  • multi-turn dialogue over several images.

Additional LoRA modules enable two generation tasks: producing webpage code from instructions and writing illustrated articles, refined with Chain-of-Thought and DPO. Across 28 benchmarks, IXC-2.5 achieves the best open-source result on 16 and matches or beats GPT-4V and Gemini Pro on many others. The work shows that a compact 7B model can deliver broad long-context multimodal abilities, and the model is publicly released.

Key points

  • Backbone is InternLM2-7B. The native training context is 24K tokens, extendable to 96K at inference through RoPE extrapolation.
  • Evaluation covers 28 benchmarks (5 video, 9 structural high-resolution, 12 general VQA, MMDU, Design2Code), mostly run with OpenCompass VLMEvalKit.
  • Video results include 69.1 on MVBench, 8.7% above VideoChat2-7B. On documents, it scores 90.9% on DocVQA, equal to InternVL-1.5, which is roughly four times larger.
  • On MMDU (multi-image, multi-turn dialogue), it beats the previous open-source best by 13.8%. On MMStar, it reaches 59.9%, ahead of GPT-4V and Gemini-Pro.
  • On Design2Code (screenshot-to-code), it averages 85.1 versus 84.8 for GPT-4V. The article-writing DPO stage uses LoRA with rank 256.
