MMC: Advancing Multimodal Chart Understanding with Large-scale Instruction Tuning

Paper · 2024 · Fuxiao Liu, Xiaoyang Wang, Wenlin Yao et al.

Summary

General-purpose open-source large multimodal models (LMMs) handle natural photos well but struggle with charts. Charts encode data through abstract elements such as axes, legends and trend lines, and these models get little training on them. The authors address this with three contributions.

  • MMC-Instruction is a 600k-instance corpus. It mixes chart–caption alignment pairs, drawn from arXiv LaTeX sources and existing chart datasets, with instruction data generated by GPT-4 in varied styles and task types.
  • MMCA is a 7B LMM tuned on this corpus. Unlike typical setups that freeze the CLIP encoder, it also updates the vision component during training. MMCA reaches state-of-the-art results among open-source models on existing chart QA benchmarks.
  • MMC-Benchmark is a human-annotated test suite with nine tasks. It can be scored either through GPT-4-judged free-form answers or through multiple-choice questions that need no GPT-4.

Experiments show that current LMMs, GPT-4V included, still misread charts. This makes the resources useful for measuring and improving chart reasoning in data-heavy applications.

Key points

  • MMC-Instruction contains three parts:
    • 210k Scientific Chart-Caption pairs from arXiv papers (2010–2020), keeping only captions of at least 25 tokens.
    • About 190k pairs sampled from Statista, PlotQA, VisText, ChartInfo and Unichart.
    • 200k GPT-4-generated instructions.
  • MMC-Benchmark covers 1,063 unique images, with 1,275 multiple-choice and 851 free-form questions. Its tasks include chart reasoning, stock chart analysis, Chart To DataTable and Chart To Json.
  • GPT-4V outperforms open-source LMMs on 7 of the 9 tasks but does poorly on Chart To DataTable and Chart To Json.
  • A manual review of 100 GPT-4V errors attributed them to perception (39%), language bias (35%), reasoning (15%) and missing knowledge (11%).
  • Code and data are available at github.com/FuxiaoLiu/MMC.
