ScienceBoard: Evaluating Multimodal Autonomous Agents in Realistic Scientific Workflows
Paper · 2025 · Qiushi Sun, Zhoumianze Liu, Chang Ma et al.
Summary
Computer-using agents can operate a desktop with mouse, keyboard or shell commands, so they might take over routine work in research labs. Until now, though, no testbed checked whether they can handle real scientific software. ScienceBoard addresses this with two parts. The first is an Ubuntu virtual machine preloaded with professional tools such as ChimeraX, Celestia and GRASS GIS, which agents can control through either a GUI or a CLI. The authors reconfigured these programs so that success is checked automatically by inspecting the system's internal state, with no manual grading of outputs. The second part is a benchmark of 169 tasks, written and validated by people with domain backgrounds, spanning six fields from biochemistry to astronomy. Agents built on leading proprietary and open models, including GPT-5, Gemini-2.5-Pro and UI-TARS, solve only a small share of tasks and reach roughly 20% at best. The authors trace most failures to weak action execution and gaps in domain knowledge. The benchmark therefore serves as a demanding yardstick for future AI research assistants.
Key points
- The 169 tasks in the benchmark cover six domains: biochemistry, algebra, astronomy, theorem proving, scientific documentation, and geographic information systems (GIS).
- The environment runs on an Ubuntu VM with integrated scientific software (e.g., ChimeraX with AlphaFold, Celestia, GRASS GIS). Each task ships with an initialization script and config files, and custom evaluation functions read the VM's internal states.
- Agent interaction is framed as a POMDP. Agents are tested with text-only observations (accessibility trees), screenshot-only observations, and combined observations, including Set-of-Mark variants.
- Average success rates across observation settings range from 0% to 15%, with a peak near 20% in the most favorable subcategories.
- The code, benchmark and leaderboard are publicly released via the ScienceBoard homepage.
