OS-Genesis: Automating GUI Agent Trajectory Construction via Reverse Task Synthesis

Paper · 2025 · Qiushi Sun, Kanzhi Cheng, Zichen Ding et al.

Summary

Training GUI agents built on Vision-Language Models requires full interaction trajectories: an overall goal, step instructions, actions, and screen states. Collecting these is hard. Human annotation is expensive. Machine synthesis that starts from fixed task lists yields limited variety and often produces broken or mismatched trajectories. OS-Genesis flips this order. In an Android emulator and a Chrome browser, it first explores interfaces by clicking, typing and scrolling through UI elements, using rules and calling GPT-4o only to fill text fields. It records each action together with the screenshots before and after it. GPT-4o then works backwards from these records. It writes step-level instructions and combines them into broader goals, which are executed to produce complete trajectories. A Trajectory Reward Model grades the results so that good data is prioritised. Agents trained on this data clearly outperform task-driven baselines on the online benchmarks AndroidWorld and WebArena. Their performance also approaches that of agents trained on human-made data. The method offers a scalable, annotation-free way to build GUI agent training data.

Key points

  • Reverse task synthesis. The pipeline turns ⟨pre-state, action, post-state⟩ triplets into low-level instructions, then abstracts these into high-level tasks that seed trajectory collection.
  • Trajectory Reward Model. The TRM scores each trajectory using its low-level instructions and its final three states. Incomplete trajectories can still earn partial credit (e.g., 3/5) if they are useful.
  • AndroidWorld result. Success rose from 9.82% with task-driven synthesis to 17.41% with OS-Genesis. Backbone models included InternVL2-8B and Qwen2-VL-7B.
  • Comparison with human data. Against 1K crowdsourced AndroidControl trajectories, OS-Genesis data keeps over 80% of the human-data performance. Trajectories built from OS-Genesis instructions also beat those built from 500 human-written AndroidControl tasks.
  • Release and limitations. Code, data and checkpoints are publicly released. A key limitation is the dependence on proprietary GPT-4o for exploration and reward modelling.
