OpenWebVoyager: Building Multimodal Web Agents via Iterative Real-World Exploration, Feedback and Optimization
Paper · 2025 · Hongliang He, Wenlin Yao, Kaixin Ma et al.
Summary
Open-source models that improve themselves through exploration have so far been mostly text-only and trained in synthetic environments, where success is easy to measure. Such agents do not transfer well to the real web, which is visual, changes over time, and gives no built-in reward. OpenWebVoyager is an open-source framework for building a multimodal web agent that learns on live websites. The backbone is idefics2-8b-instruct. At each step it receives a screenshot and an accessibility tree. It first undergoes imitation learning on successful trajectories produced by WebVoyager-4o, a GPT-4o-based agent. It then runs repeated cycles of three steps:
- it attempts newly generated tasks on its own;
- GPT-4o judges whether each trajectory succeeded;
- the successful trajectories are added to the training data for the next round.
Over one imitation phase and three cycles, task success increased steadily on the WebVoyager and Mind2Web test sets, with smaller gains on unseen websites. This shows that real-world multimodal agents can keep improving with little human labeling.
Key points
- Trajectories were collected on 48 common websites taken from WebVoyager and Mind2Web, and new task queries for each phase were created with self-instruct.
- Success rate rose from 19.9% to 25.8% on the WebVoyager test set and from 6.3% to 19.6% on Mind2Web cross-task. On Mind2Web cross-web (unseen sites), it rose from 6.6% to 10.4%.
- The model's context includes the three most recent screenshots, and it follows a ReAct-style thought-then-action format. During exploration, each query is resampled up to 5 times.
- GPT-4o was chosen as the trajectory judge because it agrees well with human evaluators (kappa = 0.72) and no open-source reward model exists for multi-screenshot trajectories.
- The agent only supports clicking, typing and scrolling, and it still depends heavily on accessibility trees rather than on visual grounding alone.
