Set-of-Mark Prompting Unleashes Extraordinary Visual Grounding in GPT-4V
Paper · 2023 · Jianwei Yang, Hao Zhang, Feng Li et al.
Summary
GPT-4V understands images well but localizes objects poorly. For example, it rarely produces correct coordinates for objects. Instead of making the model emit numbers for positions, the authors change the image it receives.
Their Set-of-Mark (SoM) approach has two steps. First, ready-made segmentation models (MaskDINO, SEEM, SAM, Semantic-SAM) split the picture into meaningful regions, at a chosen granularity and in automatic or interactive mode. Then each region gets a visible label, usually a number or letter, optionally with box or mask outlines. GPT-4V reads these labels via its OCR skill and cites regions by their identifiers in its answers. The text prompt never mentions the marks. A dedicated placement procedure keeps labels inside their regions and prevents collisions.
The team also assembled a benchmark suite of marked images. Without any training, SoM-prompted GPT-4V beats the strongest fully finetuned referring comprehension and segmentation model on RefCOCOg. The work shows that purely visual prompting can unlock fine-grained grounding in a closed LMM. It also hints at a way to generate richly annotated multimodal data at scale.
Key points
- Mark types: alphanumeric labels as the main option, with boxes and mask boundaries as extras. The authors advise matching the type to the image, e.g., avoiding digits on images full of numbers.
- Label placement algorithm:
- regions are processed from smallest to largest;
- pixels already claimed by earlier regions are excluded;
- a distance transform picks the most interior point of what remains.
- Headline result: zero-shot GPT-4V with SoM outperforms the state-of-the-art fully finetuned model on RefCOCOg referring tasks.
- Open-source LMMs such as LLaVa-1.5 and MiniGPT-v2 largely fail to interpret the marks. The authors speculate that GPT-4V's scale and data curation explain the gap.
- Code is released at github.com/microsoft/SoM (demo: som-gpt4v.github.io).
