OS-Copilot: Towards Generalist Computer Agents with Self-Improvement

Paper · 2024 · Zhiyong Wu, Chengcheng Han, Zichen Ding et al.

Summary

Most LLM-based digital agents work inside a single environment, such as a browser, a terminal or one game, so they do not transfer well to everyday computer use. This paper proposes OS-Copilot, a framework for building agents on Linux and MacOS. It gives the agent one runtime layer that covers Python execution, bash, mouse/keyboard input and API calls. The architecture has three parts. A planner splits a request into subtasks and can arrange them as a directed acyclic graph so that independent steps run in parallel. A configurator, modeled on human memory, handles working, declarative and procedural memory. An actor executes actions and critiques the results. The authors used this framework to build FRIDAY, an agent that improves itself. When it meets an unfamiliar application, it generates its own practice curriculum and stores the tools it writes for later reuse. On the GAIA benchmark, FRIDAY clearly beats earlier systems. It also learns to operate Excel and PowerPoint with little supervision. This suggests that accumulated skills can replace hand-built, app-specific engineering when building general-purpose computer assistants.

Key points

  • GAIA results:
    • On level-1 tasks, FRIDAY succeeds 40.86% of the time. The previous best system reached 30.3%, so this is about a 35% relative gain.
    • AutoGPT-4 scores 14.4% on the same tasks.
    • On level-3 tasks, which no earlier system had solved, FRIDAY reaches 6.12%.
  • Spreadsheet learning: On the spreadsheet manipulation dataset of Li et al. (2023), FRIDAY starts at 0% success. After self-directed learning it reaches 60%, which is higher than a state-of-the-art model built specifically for spreadsheet control.
  • Tool repository: It begins with 4 hand-made tools, including Bing search, page loading, audio-to-text and image captioning. FRIDAY then adds tools it generates itself, such as Excel pivot tables, chart insertion and PowerPoint text and image formatting. Tools are stored either as API services or as Python files.
  • Memory design:
    • Declarative memory holds a User Profile (still only a concept) and Semantic Knowledge, such as past trajectories and OS state.
    • Procedural memory holds the tool repository.
    • Working memory links the planner, configurator and actor.
  • Critic module: It evaluates each execution, uses the feedback to fix errors, and updates long-term memory, for example by revising tool code.
