MineDojo: Building Open-Ended Embodied Agents with Internet-Scale Knowledge

Paper · 2022 · Linxi Fan, Guanzhi Wang, Yunfan Jiang et al.

Summary

Most embodied agents are trained from scratch in narrow environments with hand-designed objectives, so they rarely generalize to new goals. The authors argue that generalist agents need three things: an open-ended environment, a large store of prior knowledge, and a scalable architecture. MineDojo, built on Minecraft, supplies the first two and demonstrates the third. The simulator extends the MineRL codebase with shared observation and action spaces and access to all three Minecraft worlds. It defines thousands of language-specified tasks, split into Programmatic tasks with automatic success checks and Creative tasks with no fixed criterion. A multimodal knowledge base of videos, wiki pages and forum posts accompanies it. From the YouTube videos and their subtitles, the authors train MineCLIP, a CLIP-style video-text contrastive model. Its matching score serves as an open-vocabulary reward for reinforcement learning and as an automatic evaluator for Creative tasks. Agents trained with this reward solve most of the tested tasks and rival agents trained with hand-engineered dense rewards. All code, data and checkpoints are open-sourced.

Key points

  • The knowledge base contains 730K+ YouTube videos with time-aligned transcripts, 6K+ Wiki pages and 340K+ Reddit posts.
  • There are 1,581 template-based Programmatic goals in four categories: Survival, Harvest, Tech Tree and Combat. The MineRL Diamond challenge corresponds to just one of these goals.
  • Creative task ideas were mined from YouTube tutorials and expanded with GPT-3. The benchmark is about two orders of magnitude larger than earlier Minecraft suites such as the MineRL Challenge.
  • With MineCLIP as the reward, agents solve most of 12 experimental tasks, with success rates up to 73% higher than dense-reward baselines in some cases. MineCLIP's scores agree well with human judgments on Creative tasks.
  • The paper appeared at NeurIPS 2022 (Datasets and Benchmarks track), with resources released at minedojo.org.
