Transformers: State-of-the-Art Natural Language Processing
Summary
Transformer architectures combined with large-scale pretraining now underpin most of NLP. Using these models in practice still raises the same engineering problems: fine-tuning, sharing, compressing and serving them on different platforms. A Hugging Face team presents Transformers, an open-source library that gives access to many published architectures through one consistent API. These include BERT, RoBERTa, GPT-2, XLNet, BART, T5, MarianMT, Longformer and DistilBERT. Each model is split into three parts: a tokenizer, a Transformer body that produces contextual embeddings, and a task-specific head. Auto classes let users switch between checkpoints, or between PyTorch and TensorFlow, with very few code changes. A community Model Hub stores pretrained weights with landing pages and model cards, so a shared model can be downloaded and run with a couple of lines of code. The paper also covers ways to move models into production, such as TorchScript, ONNX export and CoreML for mobile. The contribution is not a new benchmark score. It is shared infrastructure that puts state-of-the-art NLP within reach of researchers, practitioners and companies.
Key points
- The library is released under Apache 2.0 on GitHub and maintained by Hugging Face, with more than 400 external contributors. A separate
tokenizerslibrary written in Rust speeds up tokenization for training and deployment. - Ready-made heads cover language modeling, sequence classification, question answering, token classification, multiple choice, masked LM and conditional generation. Class names follow the pattern
XXXForSequenceClassification. Pretraining heads are released too, for example BERT's masked LM and next sentence prediction heads. - Model Hub example: FlauBERT, a French BERT, loads with
AutoTokenizer/AutoModel. The paper's case studies are SciBERT (AllenAI, trained on PubMed, shared for the CORD-19 challenge), Jiant (NYU), and DistilBART used for summarization at Plot.ly. - Experiments run with the ONNX team on BERT, RoBERTa and GPT-2 showed nearly a 4x inference speedup. Models can also be converted to CoreML for on-device use on iOS.
