OpenAgents: An Open Platform for Language Agents in the Wild
Paper · 2023 · Tianbao Xie, Fan Zhou, Zhoujun Cheng et al.
Summary
Most language-agent frameworks (e.g., AutoGPT, BabyAGI) are developer-oriented prototypes with console interfaces. Polished commercial products, such as ChatGPT's Advanced Data Analysis, Plugins and Browse with Bing, remain closed. Xie et al. address this gap with OpenAgents, an open-source platform for running and hosting LLM-based agents on real user tasks. It includes three agents:
- a Data Agent that analyzes data with Python, SQL and data tools;
- a Plugins Agent with over 200 everyday API tools;
- a Web Agent that browses the web autonomously.
Non-programmers use the agents through a web interface designed for fast, streamed responses and for handling common failures. Developers get complete frontend and backend code for local deployment, and researchers get shared components for building new agents. Instead of benchmark scores, the authors report practical lessons. Application prompts grow long and strain context limits, streaming is essential for usability, and responsiveness must be weighed against accuracy. The platform's value lies in enabling human-in-the-loop agent evaluation in open, real-world settings.
Key points
- Comparison with other frameworks: Table 1 (statistics as of September 2023) compares OpenAgents with AutoGPT, BMTools, BabyAGI, Gentopia, Open Interpreter, GAs, AgentVerse, Camel and Agents. OpenAgents is marked as supporting online hosting, a web UI, user feedback, a coding environment and web browsing in both controlled and "wild" environments. It lists ≥200 tools, compared with ≥500 for closed-source ChatGPT Plus.
- Formal framing: Agents are modeled as a POMDP (H, S, A, O, T, R). Rewards are usually ignored because current LLM agents are not trained.
- Architecture: The User Interface layer (frontend and backend) handles streaming, error handling and the user system. The Language Agent layer combines the LLM, tools (API calling, tool selection and scaling) and environments (web extension, sandbox).
- Prompts in the appendix: The Plugins Agent's API-calling prompts include retry and stop variants for failed or empty calls. The WebBot prompt enforces one browser action per step, wrapped in
<Thought>/<Action>tags. - Resources: Code is at github.com/xlang-ai/OpenAgents, the demo at chat.xlang.ai and the documentation at docs.xlang.ai. The authors are from HKU, XLang Lab, Sea AI Lab and Salesforce Research.
