CriticLean: Critic-Guided Reinforcement Learning for Mathematical Formalization

Paper · 2026 · Zhongyuan Peng, Yifan Yao, Kaijing Ma et al.

Summary

Turning informal math problems into Lean 4 theorem statements often produces code that compiles but does not mean what the original problem says. The authors argue that the evaluation step, judging whether a formalization is semantically faithful, has been neglected, so they make it the centre of their pipeline. They train CriticLeanGPT, critic models built on the Qwen family with supervised fine-tuning followed by reinforcement learning, to decide whether a Lean 4 statement matches its natural-language source. To measure this ability, they release CriticLeanBench, a balanced set of correct and flawed formalization pairs, on which their critics beat strong open and proprietary LLMs. In the full pipeline, an autoformalizer regenerates candidates until the Lean compiler accepts them and the critic approves them. This loop markedly improves human-judged accuracy over compiler-only filtering. Applying the pipeline at scale yields FineLeanCorpus, a large Lean 4 statement dataset that is more varied in topic and difficulty than earlier resources. The work matters because reliable formal statements are a prerequisite for training and evaluating automated theorem provers.

Key points

  • CriticLeanBench: 500 natural-language/Lean 4 pairs, split evenly into 250 correct and 250 incorrect. Candidates were filtered by the Lean compiler, pre-labelled by DeepSeek R1, and then checked by human reviewers.
  • Pipeline accuracy (human evaluation): With Kimina-Autoformalizer-7B as the generator, accuracy was 42.7% for a single pass, 59.0% with a compiler-feedback loop, and 86.0% with the full CriticLean loop.
  • Retention rate: Within a 200-attempt limit, 52.8% of problems yielded an approved statement, and only 12.6% succeeded on the first try. Switching the generator to Mathesis-Autoformalizer-HPO raised retention to 62.8%.
  • FineLeanCorpus: 509,358 verified entries, compared with roughly 140K in Lean-Workbook. Top-tier difficulty problems make up 17.16% of the corpus versus 7.81% in Lean-Workbook. A hard subset, FineLeanCorpus-Diamond, contains over 36,000 problems.
  • Limitations: Per-source human accuracy ranges from 69% to 100%. The authors also note that the benchmark is small and that the critic may reinforce its own biases.
