Seed1.5-VL Technical Report
Paper · 2025 · Dong Guo, Faming Wu, Feida Zhu et al.
Summary
Seed1.5-VL is ByteDance Seed's vision-language foundation model for general multimodal understanding and reasoning. It targets weaknesses that remain in current VLMs, especially the lack of rich annotations for low-level perceptual concepts.
The model pairs a 532M-parameter vision encoder with a Mixture-of-Experts LLM that has 20B active parameters. Pre-training used trillions of multimodal tokens covering images, video, text and GUI interaction data. To make up for scarce labels, the team built synthetic data pipelines for OCR, grounding, counting, 3D spatial understanding, video, STEM and long-tail knowledge. Post-training combined supervised fine-tuning, RLHF, reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards, and iterative rejection-sampling updates. On the systems side, they designed a hybrid parallelism scheme suited to the uneven sizes of the encoder and the LLM, and they rebalanced vision tokens across GPUs.
Despite its moderate size, the model leads on most of the reported public benchmarks and beats strong agent baselines. Scaling curves show no saturation. This makes the report a practical guide to building efficient multimodal models and to their remaining gaps.
Key points
- The model reached state-of-the-art results on 38 of 60 public benchmarks: 21/34 vision-language, 14/19 video and 3/7 GUI-agent tasks. It scored 77.9 on MMMU.
- In GUI control and gameplay it outperformed OpenAI CUA and Claude 3.7.
- Training infrastructure included hybrid parallelism for the asymmetric encoder/LLM pair, vision-token redistribution for GPU load balancing, and a data loader that reduces I/O under 3D parallelism.
- Known weaknesses are counting in cluttered scenes, 3D spatial reasoning, combinatorial search (Klotski, mazes), temporal and multi-image reasoning, and hallucinations driven by language priors.
- The model is served through Volcano Engine (model ID doubao-1-5-thinking-vision-pro-250428) and in the Doubao chatbot.
