ReCreate: Reasoning and Creating Domain Agents Driven by Experience
Paper · 2026 · Zhezheng Hao, Hong Wang, Jian Luo et al.
Summary
Most practical LLM agents still depend on scaffolds that people write by hand: prompts, workflows, tools, and memory. This is costly and hard to scale across many domains. Earlier automated agent generators, such as ADAS, optimize scaffolds as a black box guided only by final scores. That approach reveals little about why an agent failed and requires expensive repeated evaluation.
ReCreate takes a white-box approach. A strong LLM acts as the optimizer and inspects interaction experience (trajectories, execution and evaluation logs, environment state) to decide concrete scaffold edits, such as new rules, new tools, or reordered workflows. The design has three parts:
- a store that lets the optimizer retrieve experience on demand,
- a pipeline that turns reasoning over that evidence into scaffold changes,
- hierarchical updates that generalize fixes for single tasks into domain-level patterns.
Across thirteen benchmarks in four domains, ReCreate beats both human-designed agents and automated baselines, even when it starts from minimal seed scaffolds, and it costs less to run. This suggests that frontier models can increasingly take over expert scaffold engineering.
Key points
- The scaffold is split into four editable modules: Role & Object, Process & Strategy, Action & Tool, and Memory & Retrieval. The evaluation domains are software engineering (SWE-bench), data science (DA-Code, DS-1000), math, and digital tasks, with gpt-5-mini as the task agent.
- In the ablations, the full system scores 60.19 on SWE, 39.77 on DA-Code, and 77.74 on DS. Removing the creation router or the domain-level update lowers all three scores, for example SWE drops to 58.00 or 57.09.
- With Claude-opus as the optimizer, the generated scaffolds consistently outperform human-designed ones. A gpt-5-mini optimizer mostly does not, so the optimizer's reasoning strength is crucial.
- Scaffold optimization costs roughly 36–82% less than ADAS. For comparison, ADAS needs about $500 for a single ARC run on 20 samples.
- One experience-derived fix illustrates the approach: on SWE-bench, adding a pre-submission
git diff --cachedcheck alone raised the pass rate by over 2%. Code is available at github.com/zz-haooo/ReCreate.
