Don't Act Blindly: Robust GUI Automation via Action-Effect Verification and Self-Correction

Paper · 2026 · Yuzhe Zhang, Xianwei Xue, Xingyong Wu et al.

Summary

Vision-language GUI agents usually assume each action works as intended. On real devices, latency, rendering lag or interruptions often make a tap do nothing. The agent then keeps acting on a false belief and can loop on the same useless action. VeriGUI tackles this by making the agent check, at every step, whether its last action had the predicted effect.

Its Thinking–Verification–Action–Expectation (TVAE) cycle has the model forecast the screen change after each action. On the next step, it compares that forecast with the new screenshot and marks the step SUCCESS or NO_CHANGE. When a failure is detected, the model switches to diagnosis and recovery reasoning.

Training has two stages:

  • Robust SFT: a mix of normal trajectories and synthetic failure-recovery trajectories.
  • GRPO: offline training that treats failed actions as leaving the screen unchanged to mimic online feedback. Rewards penalise falsely claiming success more heavily than missing a failure.

The authors also release a Robustness Benchmark derived from AndroidControl-High. VeriGUI-3B and -7B beat open-source baselines at recovering from failures. This matters because it adds self-correction without costly live-emulator RL.

Key points

  • New benchmark and metrics: the AndroidControl-High-based benchmark injects controlled failures and introduces two metrics, Loop Rate and Recovery Success Rate (RSR). VeriGUI-3B reaches 51.1% RSR and VeriGUI-7B 52.5%, ahead of all tested open-source baselines.
  • Reward design: the action reward is ±1.0. The verification reward gives +1.0 for a correct judgment, −0.5 for a missed failure and −2.0 for a hallucinated success. Effect prediction is scored with BERT-Score.
  • Reward ablation (3B): RSR rises from 44.9% with the action reward alone, to 48.1% with the verification reward added, to 51.1% with all three components.
  • Failure-sample ratio in SFT: without failure samples, no verification ability emerges (RSR 29.7%). A 70:30 success-to-failure mix gives the best RSR (45.5%).
  • Compute cost: per-step output grows by about 45%, but early loop-breaking keeps trajectory-level overhead small. VeriGUI-7B uses 712 tokens per trajectory, versus 847 for Qwen2.5-VL-3B.
  • Limitations: the method only handles failures that leave the screen unchanged, not wrong navigations or crashes. Performance also drops on long tasks.
