InfiGUIAgent: A Multimodal Generalist GUI Agent with Native Reasoning and Reflection

Paper · 2026 · Yuhang Liu, Pengxiang Li, Zishu Wei et al.

Summary

Multimodal-LLM GUI agents often fail to connect an instruction to the right on-screen element or tap location. They tend to depend on accessibility trees or Set-of-Marks, and in long tasks they repeat the same mistakes. InfiGUIAgent tackles both problems with a compact agent built on Qwen2-VL-2B through two rounds of supervised fine-tuning. The first round combines existing resources covering screen understanding, grounding, GUI question answering, general multimodal knowledge and function calling. The second round uses synthesized trajectory data that teaches the model to reason inside its own output. At each step it checks whether the last action met its prediction, plans at a strategic and a tactical level, acts, and states what it expects next. Using only raw screenshots, the 2B model reaches 76.8% on ScreenSpot and a 0.13 success rate on AndroidWorld, which the authors call competitive with several open-source baselines. Ablations show that both stages contribute. The work suggests that small, deployable agents can benefit from internalized reasoning instead of extra interface metadata or elaborate prompting.

Key points

  • Stage 1 data:

    • GUI understanding: Screen2Words, Screen Annotation
    • Grounding: GUIEnv, RICO Semantic Annotation, SeeClick-Web, RICO SCA, Widget Caption, UIBert Reference Expression, OmniAct-Single Click
    • QA: GUIChat, ScreenQA, Complex QA
    • General knowledge: LLaVA-OneVision, PixMo
    • Tool usage: Glaive-function-calling
  • Stage 2 reasoning loop: each step runs Reflection → Hierarchical Reasoning (strategic layer summarizing progress and planning, tactical layer for the current step and grounding) → Action → Expectation. The authors plan to release this synthesized data openly.

  • Ablations on InfiGUIAgent-2B (ScreenSpot accuracy / AndroidWorld success rate):

    ConfigurationScreenSpotAndroidWorld
    Full model76.8%0.13
    Without Stage 276.0%0.00
    Without Stage 174.3%0.09
    Without the structured reasoning formats76.6%0.09
  • Qualitative example: on a stopwatch task, the base Qwen2-VL-2B taps at random and never finishes. InfiGUIAgent opens the Stopwatch tab and completes the task step by step.

  • Limitations: the authors note that they tested mainly small models aimed at edge devices. Robustness to error recovery, coordination across apps and changing interfaces remains unsolved.
