MiniCPM-o 4.5: Towards Real-Time Full-Duplex Omni-Modal Interaction

Paper · 2026 · Junbo Cui, Bokai Xu, Chongyi Wang et al.

Summary

Current multimodal LLMs mostly handle interaction in turns: they first take in input, then answer, and they only act when the user explicitly asks. The authors argue that this paradigm, more than missing modalities or latency, is the main barrier to human-like interaction. MiniCPM-o 4.5 is their 9B-parameter open-source model that can watch, listen and speak at the same time, and can also comment or remind the user unprompted.

Its core technique is Omni-Flow. This framework places all input and output streams on one shared timeline, which it slices into short time windows, an idea borrowed from time-division multiplexing. Perception and generation therefore run in parallel rather than taking turns. The architecture is trained end to end: streaming encoders, a Qwen3-8B backbone, and lightweight speech decoders that use a time-aligned interleaving scheme called TAIL.

The authors report that the model:

  • comes close to Gemini 2.5 Flash on vision-language tasks;
  • beats Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B on omni-modal understanding and speech quality;
  • runs on edge hardware with under 12GB RAM.

This makes full-duplex assistants practical for local deployment.

Key points

  • Components: SigLIP ViT (0.4B) with LLaVA-UHD slicing and a resampler that reduces each slice from 1024 to 64 tokens (16× compression). Whisper Medium (0.3B) audio features are cut from 50 to 10 tokens/s. A ~0.3B Llama decoder produces S3 speech tokens, and a streaming flow-matching decoder turns them into waveforms, which enables voice cloning from reference audio.
  • Efficient backbone: The backbone only emits text, about 3–4 steps per second, instead of roughly 25 speech tokens per second. This helps preserve both efficiency and language ability.
  • Throughput and memory: On a single RTX 4090 with vLLM in INT4, MiniCPM-o 4.5 reaches 212.3 tokens/s, 0.58 s first-token latency and 11 GB memory. Qwen3-Omni-30B-A3B reaches 147.8 tokens/s, 0.98 s and 20 GB, and in BF16 it runs out of memory.
  • Local deployment: The new llama.cpp-omni runtime gets the real-time factor down to about 0.2 in INT4 on both RTX 4090 and DGX Spark. It works on macOS, Windows and Linux.
  • Limitations:
    • occasional unstable streaming speech, including mispronunciation and accidental English/Chinese mixing;
    • limited robustness in long sessions;
    • fairly simple proactive behaviour.
