Audio-centric Video Understanding Benchmark without Text Shortcut
Paper · 2025 · Yudong Yang, Jimin Zhuang, Guangzhi Sun et al.
Summary
Benchmarks for multimodal LLMs that handle video mostly test vision. Audio, when it appears at all, plays a supporting role. Many of these benchmarks also have a "text shortcut": a model can often pick the right answer from the question and options alone, without watching the video. The authors address both problems with AVUT, a benchmark built around sound.
AVUT uses newly collected YouTube videos from 18 domains where audio matters. Its tasks fall into two families:
- Audio content understanding: extracting information, counting events and locating them in time.
- Audio-visual alignment: linking speech to characters, objects, on-screen text and video segments, plus speaker diarization.
The data has two parts. One is fully annotated by humans. The other is built semi-automatically: Gemini generates questions through in-context learning, and human annotators check them. To remove text shortcuts, the authors filter questions based on answer permutations.
Tests show that popular benchmarks can be answered well above chance from text alone, while AVUT stays near random guessing. AVUT therefore gives a more trustworthy measure of real audio-visual comprehension.
Key points
- AVUT has 2,662 videos (average about 67.8 s) and 11,609 QA pairs, in two subsets:
- AV-Human: 698 videos, 1,734 human-written QA pairs.
- AV-Gemini: 1,964 videos, 9,875 Gemini-generated, human-checked QA pairs.
- There are eight tasks: AIE, ACC, AEL, AVCM, AVOM, AVTM, AVSM and AVDiar. AVSM and AVDiar are open-ended; the rest are four-option multiple choice.
- Text-only accuracy with GPT-4o is 68.00% on VideoVista and 41.22% on Video-MME. AVUT gets 25.32%, close to the 25% chance level.
- Under "cycled accuracy" (a question counts only if all four option orderings are answered correctly), GPT-4o scores 1.89% on AVUT text-only, far below other benchmarks.
- Gemini 1.5 Pro leads on AV-Human with 78.34% MCQ accuracy. Current open-source audio-visual LLMs often trail visual-only models, which points to weak use of audio.
