Summary
The strongest video generators are proprietary, so the open research community lacks a comparable base model. HunyuanVideo, from Tencent's Hunyuan team, is an open-source text-to-video foundation model built to close that gap. The report covers the whole pipeline. Data is collected under GDPR rules, filtered in stages, and annotated with structured captions. The model is a Transformer trained with Flow Matching in a latent space compressed by a Causal 3D VAE, with text prompts encoded by a large language model. The team also built dedicated training and inference infrastructure. Instead of scaling data, compute and parameters blindly, they designed a scaling strategy that cuts compute needs by up to 5×. This allowed them to train a 13-billion-parameter model, the largest open-source video generator at the time. In professional human evaluation against Runway Gen-3, Luma 1.6 and three leading Chinese commercial systems, HunyuanVideo received the best overall satisfaction scores, with motion dynamics as its clearest advantage. The released code gives researchers a strong base for further video work, including avatar animation.
Key points
- Data filtering: clips are cut into single shots with PySceneDetect and Transnet v2, then deduplicated using internal VideoCLIP embeddings. They are balanced over about 10K k-means concept centroids and screened with Dover aesthetics scoring, a clarity model, optical-flow motion checks, OCR, and YOLOX-like detectors for watermarks and logos.
- Progressive datasets: filter thresholds tighten across stages, producing 256p, 360p, 540p and 720p video sets, from 256×256×65 up to 720×1280×129. A final fine-tuning set of about 1M samples is selected by human annotators. Two image sets support text-to-image pre-training: one with billions of pairs and one with hundreds of millions.
- Captions: an in-house VLM produces JSON-structured captions with fields such as short description, dense description, background, style and shot type.
- Evaluation: more than 1,500 prompts were rated by 60 people. Applications include audio-, pose-, expression- and hybrid-driven avatar animation, plus a video-to-audio model.
- Code: available at github.com/Tencent/HunyuanVideo.
