Resonant Context Anchoring: Decoupling Attention Routing and Signal Gain at Inference Time

Paper · 2026 · Mingkuan Zhao, Yide Gao, Wentao Hu et al.

Summary

Large language models often ignore evidence in their prompt when it contradicts facts memorized during pre-training, which leads to hallucinations. The authors argue that the model usually finds the relevant context but cannot use it well. The context signal in the residual stream is too weak compared with parametric signals injected by the MLP layers. Their method, Resonant Context Anchoring (RCA), is a training-free change to self-attention applied at inference time. It reads the raw pre-softmax query–key scores as a measure of how well a query aligns with each context token. It then rectifies these scores with Softplus and uses the result to enlarge the norms of the value vectors for context tokens. Attention probabilities are left unchanged, so routing stays separate from signal gain. On the Llama-3 series, RCA improves faithfulness on summarization and knowledge-conflict benchmarks such as NQ-Swap. Closed-book QA scores stay essentially flat, and the only overhead is element-wise operations. This makes RCA a cheap alternative to contrastive decoding, which adds latency, and to activation suppression, which can hurt fluency.

Key points

  • RCA separates attention routing (where the model attends) from gain (how strongly attended context values contribute). Only value-vector norms are scaled; the softmax distribution is not modified.
  • It needs no training or extra forward passes, unlike contrastive decoding approaches such as CAD. Code is released at github.com/yidGao/RCA-Implementation.
  • General ability is preserved:
    • MC1 is identical to the baseline at 38.92%.
    • MC2 is 55.61% vs. 55.64% for the baseline.
    • TriviaQA Exact Match is 56.52% vs. 56.58%.
    • PopQA accuracy is 26.59% vs. 26.64%.
  • On irrelevant or empty contexts, alignment scores are low, so the amplification factor stays near 1. The intervention effectively goes dormant, which lets RCA run as an always-on decoding strategy.
  • The method's one hyperparameter is the resonance sensitivity coefficient γ. The authors report that its optimal value stays largely the same between Llama-3-8B and 70B, so only a small development set is needed for tuning.
