Resolving the Security-Auditability Dilemma with Auditable Latent Chain-of-Thought Alignment

Paper · 2026 · Guan Wang, Biyu Zhou, Xuehai Tang et al.

Summary

Reasoning-based safety alignment has LLMs write out their safety deliberation as a Chain-of-Thought (CoT), which makes supervision and auditing possible. The authors argue this openness creates two weaknesses. Adaptive attackers can use the visible reasoning as feedback to refine jailbreaks, and harmful tokens mentioned during reasoning can be copied into the final answer. They name this tension the Security-Auditability Dilemma and propose ALCA (Auditable Latent CoT Alignment).

In ALCA, a lightweight probe flags risky queries and switches the model into a latent mode. The last-layer hidden state is fed back as the next input instead of passing through the lm_head, so the safety reasoning steers generation without ever appearing as text. Supervisors can still recover that reasoning in readable form through a restricted self-decoding mechanism unlocked by a control embedding.

On Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.2 and Qwen2-7B-Chat, ALCA cuts adaptive jailbreak success by over 40% versus strong baselines without hurting utility. This suggests robustness and auditability can coexist.

Key points

  • Motivating study (Table 1):
    • With no safety reasoning, general attack success rate (ASR) is 58.2%; explicit or hidden CoT lowers it to 15.1%.
    • Under adaptive attacks, ASR is 76.3% when the CoT is fully visible but 25.9% when it is hidden from the attacker, a 50.4-point gap.
  • Baselines compared: No Defense, PPL, AED, SafeDecoding, RLHF, explicit reasoning (STAIR), User-Side Masking, and a decoded ALCA variant. Full ALCA achieves the lowest ASR on both tested models.
  • Self-decoding fidelity: BLEU-4 of 0.86, ROUGE-L of 0.91, and semantic similarity of 0.96 against the original reasoning.
  • Efficiency: about 1.9x throughput relative to explicit CoT.
  • Limitations:
    • Requires white-box fine-tuning.
    • Evaluated on text-only models.
    • Relies on benchmarks such as AdvBench that mostly reflect Western safety norms.
    • Code and data are promised for release after acceptance.
