IF-CRITIC: Towards a Fine-Grained LLM Critic for Instruction-Following Evaluation
Paper · 2026 · Bosi Wen, Yilin Niu, Cunxiang Wang et al.
Summary
LLM-as-a-Judge is often used to supply rewards for training instruction-following. It has two problems. First, it is expensive, because strong proprietary or reasoning models must judge every constraint in a separate call. Second, it is unreliable: these judges miss errors and count poorly. IF-CRITIC is a 14B critic built to fix both.
A checklist generator first splits an instruction into its individual constraints. The critic then writes an explanation and a binary verdict for every checklist item in a single pass. To build training data, the authors prompted Deepseek-R1 for checklist-guided critiques. A multi-stage filtering pipeline then kept the best critique per constraint, using rule-based checks for length constraints. After supervised fine-tuning, the critic was refined with DPO applied to individual constraints rather than whole critiques.
IF-CRITIC beats strong judges, including o4-mini and Gemini-3-Pro, on four meta-evaluation benchmarks. Used as a reward source for DPO and GRPO, it improves policy models more than the baselines do, at a fraction of the cost. This makes fine-grained instruction-following rewards affordable at scale.
Key points
- Pipeline: checklist generation → Deepseek-R1 expert critiques → multi-stage critique filtering → fine-tuning → constraint-level DPO. Code and model are released at github.com/thu-coai/IF-CRITIC.
- Policy optimization: IF-CRITIC rewards were used to train Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct and LLama3.1-8B-Instruct. Evaluation used Multi-IF (English/Chinese average), CFBench and SysBench, with GPT-4o-2024-11-20 as the judge for the last two.
- Cost versus QwQ-32B: for GRPO, the QwQ-32B critic took about 3.1× longer per training step than IF-CRITIC. For computing DPO rewards, it took roughly 13× longer.
- Other training findings:
- With GRPO, the small models approached larger siblings (32B/70B) of the same family.
- Skywork-Reward-V2, a scalar reward model, gave only marginal gains.
- GRPO outperformed DPO overall.
- Limitations: rule-augmented verification covers only length constraints. Model-judge biases such as verbosity and self-enhancement may persist.
