GaLa: Hypergraph-Guided Visual Language Models for Procedural Planning

Paper · 2026 · Kun Wang, Li Yiming, Mingcheng Qu et al.

Summary

Vision-language models used for procedural planning in embodied AI usually rely on explicit geometry such as bounding boxes or coordinates. As a result, they miss two kinds of knowledge: implicit relations implied by object attributes (for example, what can support or hold what) and the grouping of objects into functional zones such as a kitchen or dining area. Without this, agents can loop or stall in ambiguous scenes.

GaLa addresses this with a scene hypergraph that sits between vision and language. Detected objects become nodes. GPT-generated area labels act as hyperedges that group objects by attributes and function. An LLM also scores whether each object's attributes are normal or counterfactual. A Tri-View HyperGraph Encoder then uses contrastive learning to keep node-level, area-level and node–area association representations consistent. The resulting hypergraph knowledge is refined in a chain-of-thought style and passed, together with images and task text, to the VLM, which predicts the next action.

On ActPlan-1K and ALFRED, GaLa beats its InternVL3-based baselines on executability, LCS and correctness. This suggests that explicit structural scene semantics make VLM planners more reliable.

Key points

  • ActPlan-1K results:
    • Counterfactual activities: 55.1% executability, 0.59 LCS, 37.2% correctness.
    • Normal activities: 65.8% executability, 0.66 LCS, 47.5% correctness.
  • ALFRED results: 89.9% executability, 0.67 LCS and 50.1% correctness.
  • Ablation on ActPlan-1K (hypergraph construction alone):
    • Counterfactual: executability rises from 45.2% to 51.7%, correctness from 28.2% to 34.2%.
    • Normal: executability rises from 52.9% to 61.5%, correctness from 38.4% to 44.3%.
    • Adding the node, edge and combined contrastive objectives brings further gains, and the same pattern holds on ALFRED.
  • Evaluation metrics:
    • Executability: the share of generated actions that can actually be executed in the simulator.
    • LCS: overlap with human-written reference plans.
    • Correctness: whether the plan completes the task.
  • Limitations stated by the authors:
    • ActPlan-1K provides only a few images per action, so the hypergraphs may be incomplete.
    • More advanced graph-theoretic techniques remain unexplored.
