GameplayQA: A Benchmarking Framework for Decision-Dense POV-Synced Multi-Video Understanding of 3D Virtual Agents
Paper · 2026 · Yunzhe Wang, Runhui Xu, Kexin Zheng et al.
Summary
Multimodal LLMs are increasingly used as the perception layer for agents acting in 3D worlds. Existing video benchmarks rarely test the skills these agents need: following fast state changes, attributing actions to the right entity, and reasoning across several first-person views at once. GameplayQA addresses this gap with an end-to-end pipeline rather than a fixed dataset. Synchronized multiplayer gameplay videos from 9 commercial games are densely captioned on parallel timelines. Labels are organized by entity (Self, Other agents, World) and cover states, actions, objects and events. Annotators also write deliberately wrong labels, which serve as distractors. A deterministic, template-based generator combines these annotations into multiple-choice questions at three levels: basic perception, temporal reasoning, and cross-video understanding. Because the distractors are typed, each wrong answer indicates a specific kind of hallucination. Tests of 16 frontier MLLMs show a clear gap to humans. Accuracy drops from level to level, with the weakest areas being other-agent attribution, temporal grounding and decision-dense scenes. The same pipeline also transfers to real-world video.
Key points
- Annotation density is about 1.22 labels per second. Six primitive label types are combined into 15 task categories, grouped into levels L1 (single reference), L2 (temporal) and L3 (cross-video, including POV identification and cross-video ordering).
- The generator first produced about 400K candidate questions. These were downsampled to 4K for balanced coverage, and quality assurance (a language-prior filter plus human checks) left a final set of 2.4K QA pairs.
- Distractors are categorized as lexical, scene, temporal or role-based confusions. This allows errors to be traced to a specific failure type rather than reported only as a single score.
- Cross-domain test: the pipeline was applied to Nexar dashcam collision clips and Ego-Humans Lego-assembly videos (4 videos, about 113 s in total). It generated 5,463 candidate questions, reduced to 213, at a density of 0.50 labels/s. Gemini 2.5 Pro scored highest (66.2%), and the difficulty ordering matched the gameplay results.
- Limitations: labeling a 30-second clip takes 25–35 minutes. About 8% of the questions had answers marked as unclear, and most of these were intent questions. The benchmark does not ask questions about choosing the best next action.
