Hearing to Translate: The Effectiveness of Speech Modality Integration into LLMs

Paper · 2026 · Sara Papi, Javier Garcia Gilabert, Zachary Hopton et al.

Summary

Speech-LLMs attach an audio encoder to a large language model so it can translate speech directly, without a separate transcription step. It is unclear whether this beats traditional approaches: cascades that pass ASR output to a text LLM, and direct speech foundation models (SFMs). The authors built Hearing to Translate, an open test suite covering 16 benchmarks, 13 language pairs and nine challenging conditions. These include accents, code-switching, disfluencies, noise, emotion, named entities, gender bias and long recordings. They tested 22 systems with a shared prompt template and recommended decoding settings. Quality was scored mainly with reference-free quality-estimation metrics, checked against reference-based scores and a small human study. Cascades were the most dependable choice overall. Newer Speech-LLMs equal or beat them in some settings, especially noisy, code-switched and disfluent speech. Standalone SFMs fall behind both. The practical lesson is that an LLM, either built in or added as a pipeline stage, is key to good speech translation.

Key points

  • The comparison covers 6 Speech-LLMs against 16 baselines: 4 direct SFM systems and 12 cascades pairing SFMs (e.g., Whisper, SeamlessM4T) with multilingual LLMs. The suite is released at github.com/sarapapi/hearing2translate.
  • Benchmarks include FLEURS, CoVoST2, EuroParl-ST, the WMT speech domain, WinoST, CommonAccent, CS-FLEURS, MCIF, mExpresso and ACL6060 (short and long-form).
  • All three paradigms tend to default to masculine forms rather than using contextual gender cues, and the LLM component causes most of this bias. Accent changes produce large score swings, most strongly for Speech-LLMs.
  • The QE versions of xCOMET and MetricX correlate almost perfectly (≈1.0 global) with their reference-based counterparts. MetricX reaches 0.57 system-level correlation with human judgments.
  • Human annotators most often found mistranslations, terminology errors and overtranslation. Overtranslation was especially common in LLM-based systems.
